Dearly Departed

Dearly Departed

Homemaker APRIL is interrupted from her kitchen window daydream of a sunny meadow by her husband, JEREMY. He blames April for the previous night’s violence (seen in flashback) – and then grows incensed when eggs on the stove begin to burn. He storms off to his job at the bank.

While April is telemarketing, Jeremy calls: he has spilled coffee on his shirt and needs her to bring him a clean one. April frantically irons a shirt when suddenly the TV news announces there has been an explosion, leveling Jeremy’s bank. Stunned, April moves to the sink and removes her wedding ring while dreaming of the meadow. What everyone else views as a tragedy brings her blessed release.  Moments later April screens a voice message from her unharmed husband, which punctures her brief state of euphoria. Having tasted freedom, she can no longer return to her old life and must find a way to save herself. She throws on her coat, grabs the ironed shirt to bring to Jeremy and leaves. But she never makes it to him.

That night, Detective Morrison informs Jeremy that April’s car has been located – but not April.  Many people perished in the bank explosion and finding Jeremy’s shirt still on its hanger, police determine April went into the bank to find him and lost her life. Or did she?
